Fredrick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955)

The Alexander Technique has been taught in the UK since 1904.

It was developed by Fredrick Matthias Alexander, an Australian actor who had problems with his voice, which prevented him from working.  He sought the advice of doctors who told him there was no physical problem with his vocal system which they could detect.  Undeterred and unwilling to give up his acting career, Alexander took it upon himself to see if he could work out for himself what was going wrong with his voice. Through careful observation and experiment, he noticed it was the way he used the whole of his body that was responsible for the vocal problems.

The technique he developed is a unique and practical method of becoming aware of how we use ourselves in everyday life.
