A young man who comes to me for Alexander lessons who is also a keen cyclist (keen enough to cycle back to the UK from Korea!) asked how he could apply the Alexander Technique to cycling.
We worked particularly on how to come forward from the hip joints rather than the lower back, to reach the handlebars. Leaning forward from the lower back causes the back to round: C-shaped. As well as putting strain on the back, this affects the breathing capacity for going up hills. The lower part of the lungs are compressed, making it difficult use your full lung capacity.
He now has a glance in shop windows as he cycles past, to check his head,neck and back are nicely aligned.
